Starting tomorrow, there will be an Armenian food festival in Friendship Heights, D.C. This is a great chance to try some Armenian food. The festival will take place at St. Mary Armenian Apostolic Church. The great part about this festival is that it runs from Oct. 19-22 and will start at 11 a.m., so it is a perfect lunch opportunity.

Here’s more information from their website:

What: 63rd Annual St. Mary Armenian Church Fall Food Festival

When: Wednesday, October 19, 11am to 2pm

Thursday, October 20, 11am to 2pm
Friday, October 21, 11am to 2pm and 5pm to 9pm
Saturday, October 22, 11am to 9pm

Where: St. Mary Armenian Apostolic Church, 4125 Fessenden Street, NW, Washington D.C. 20016

Metro Red Line to Friendship Heights Station

You can get your fill of old time favorites like shish kabob and Armenian style rice pilaf, eggplant delight and hummus. Or you can indulge in lahmajoon, a thin crust pizza with a smear of lamb, pepper, and tomato. You might also be tempted by the kufta, a meat stuffed lamb meatball, or the cheese boureg baked with cheese and filo, or the yalanchi dolma stuffed grape leaves.

We recently read an article, “Embassy Series Duo Revels in Sweet Sounds of Success,” in The Washington Diplomat about the Embassy Series, which from 1994 has been hosting musical performances at embassies and ambassadors’ residences throughout D.C. The best part is that each of these musical performances are followed by a reception. This year’s season started September 15, so there’s plenty of upcoming music and food. The only drawback is that the events are a little pricey (at least for us), between $50-$100 a ticket (and we read that the sell out fast). Still, it could be great for an anniversary or something like that. We’re curious about the experience.

The countries participating this year are the Czech Republic, Hungary, Ukraine, Luxembourg, Romania, Turkey, Austria, Australia, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Iraq, Armenia, and Poland. It might be worthwhile to spend the money around Christmas and to try a country whose cuisine is hard to come by here – maybe Romania (which is also being hosted at the Ambassador’s residence, which is pretty neat). That event is $100 and includes a Romanian buffet with wine.
